CCR - Commercial

Critical Creative Reflection

1. How does your product use or challenge conventions AND how does it represent social groups or issues?
I would say that me and my group followed the normal conventions for my commercial. My commercial is about a sports drink called Más+, which meant I researched past commercials done on sports drink products. It resulted in that there were many common factors in the conventions they used. For example, sports drink commercials tend to have close up shots, ambient sounds, and even non-diegetic sounds. For my commercial, we followed the most common conventions that were used in previous sports commercials such as Gatorade and Powerade. However, there might have been a couple of conventions used in my commercial that are not commonly used in others, such an over the should shot or low angle, which might not be as common as other conventions in sports drink commercials.
My project was geared towards a wide audience of individuals who might do sports or even is an athlete. My project may as well attract audiences who enjoy refreshing and hydrating themselves with non-water flavored drinks, in which Más+ would apply to them My commercial of Más+ can be targeted to an audience of any gender, and any age. Also, since Messi has a reputation and is recognized by many individuals globally, this commercial can attract audiences who are fans of Messi, and therefore want to try a piece of what makes Messi as legendary as he is. This as well applies to soccer players who aspire to be like Messi, since he created this drink that is said to help him hydrate and refuel himself in the field, attracting athletes especially those that are soccer players.

2. How does your product engage with audiences AND how would it be distributed as a real media text?
Throughout my commercial, it's not just a bunch of clips of the same product put together. Rather, my commercial creates a storyline and a plot on how a soccer player is demotivated since they feel weak and dehydrated and shows the cause and effect of consuming the Más+ sports drink and how it enhanced their abilities by refreshing and hydrating them. My commercial that implements a storyline within a short span of 30 seconds attracts individuals’ attention by seeking what will happen next. Due to this anticipation of waiting to see what will occur next in the commercial, it creates an impact on the people watching the project making them want to stay. The benefits and effects of utilizing Más+ on athletes and individuals and that it can drastically change someone positively will effectively grab the audiences’ attention and want them to stay and watch more of my commercial and what this product may bring.
My commercial on Más+ will be displayed on many platforms that will efficiently reach my audience. YouTube is a platform in which my commercial could be displayed to an audience globally. The first step in distributing my commercial is producing it, which has already been executed by filming it and putting it together. Next, distributions will occur by contacting platforms to utilize my commercial on the Internet. This way, an audience isn’t restricted by their location and globally people can view my commercial. Marketing my commercial and the product will be enhanced by getting an increase of popularity by having more online platforms advertise it, and even real-life promotions such as billboards in the streets. This can successfully allow the distribution of my commercial as a real media text.

3. How did your production skills develop throughout this project?
Throughout the commercial I had to film and develop; I feel that my production skills majorly were improved and enhanced. I have learned the different angles and camera shot techniques that help develop a message and theme to an audience. This knowledge allows me in future scenarios to understand the true message and theme of a commercial that is displayed in my everyday life. Also, having to do an editing process throughout this project has made me more experienced with editing software, as well as I got a greater appreciation for those individuals who have to edit way more complex films than commercials in everyday media. Something that I appreciate more now in everyday media but dislike in filming is the amount of retakes and retries it might take to perfect a scene within a film. This experience hasn’t changed my perspective on what career I may want in the future, however filming can now be a consideration on a possible career I may want since I am more experienced in the requirements it takes to have a career in filming. For my next project, I would like to keep utilizing the filming techniques I used, however I would like to enhance my abilities next time in the methods I use when editing into my filming to overall enhance the editing process and overall make my project higher quality. My journey as a filmmaker has taught me a lot of lessons in not only how to film better and edit, but I also earned a greater knowledge and appreciation of all the required work and effort it takes to make everyday media.

4. How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware and online – in this project?
Integrating technology was a crucial part in completing my commercial to its fullest. Firstly, for the actual filming, I used a cellular device and used the camera application to film my scenes. My cellular device of an iPhone and the high camera quality it contains were key components in producing my commercial. To put all my scenes together, I used an editing software called CapCut that allowed me to effectively edit the scenes I needed to put together to make a complete commercial, assisting in putting out the intended message of my commercial. To distribute my commercial to other viewers, I used technology and the Internet to post my commercial online via YouTube for individuals to view. Lastly, to post my commercial onto my blog I embedded the coding of my video on YouTube, into the coding of my blog, which allows viewers to view my commercial through my blog. Overall, integrating technology was a very important factor in completing my commercial to its fullest.
