      Title Research: American Psycho

The Title Research was conducted on: Art of the Titles Website

  • What titles are displayed during the opening sequences?

  • During the opening sequences of American Psycho, the titles displayed was the movie title, the featuring/main actors, credits to those contributing to the movie such as the director, producer, company of production, and much more. The titles are displayed over a white background, with a sudden chop of a steak, to then smoothly transition to an elegant restaurant and later a night club. This introduces the main character, with the creditors to the movies still being displayed as titles.

  • What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?

  • In the opening sequence of American Psycho, the first images have a white background with blood dripping and then displaying the movie title. The next images contain a red sauce being poured and then a steak is chopped and served to an individual, introducing the setting of an elegant restaurant. The following images are individuals discussing in the elegant restaurant, and later the main character is in a nightclub, appearing to be threatening an individual at the night club.

  • How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset?

  • In the film American Psycho, it establishes a feeling of thriller by making the audience feel tense and wanting to know more on what is going to unfold in the story. This is done by the character being seen as a fancy businessman, acting very elegant and luxurious at a lunch (during the day), to then transitioning to the night at a club, shockingly threatening an individual working there. This establishment in the film in the first few minutes creates elements of captivation and tension in the audience, creating the feeling of thriller from the outset of the film.
